The Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre at 64 Avenue in the Surrey neighbourhood of Cloverdale is the place to go for the annual July 1st celebration of Canada Day.
The amphitheater is open free to the public and its grounds teem with enjoyable events and activities for all ages. The traditional offerings during the celebration include carnival amusement rides, food trucks and kids’ programs.
Visiting the amphitheatre on the Canadian red-letter day also offers the opportunity to appreciate native culture at the indigenous village. Typically, there are workshops, storytelling, performances, and an indigenous marketplace in this village.
A Community Hub is another Canada Day attraction at the amphitheater’s grounds, dishing out DJ music and dance battles along with servings of cold refreshments including beer, wine, and ciders.
Activities at the amphitheater run from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., with music concerts scheduled in several stages onwards the evening. The extravaganza winds up with colourful fireworks as a fitting finale for the holiday.
On ordinary days, you can relax on the grass fields and trails around the amphitheater or spend a break by its pond, which is open to radio-controlled electric boats.
The amphitheater’s area is also adjacent to another Surrey landmark, the 138-acre Cloverdale Fairgrounds, host to the Cloverdale Rodeo and Country Fair traditionally held in the third week of May. Held since 1938, the rodeo competition of this event is one of Canada’s largest.
Also known as the Cloverdale Exhibition Grounds, this facility’s other amenities include the Agriplex arena for concerts, trade fairs, and horse shows.
Just south of the fairgrounds and the amphitheater, you can try your luck at the Elements Casino Surrey offering live horse racing, games tables, slot machines, and entertainment shows for free.
The Bill Reid Millennium Amphitheatre is also a next-door neighbour of the Cloverdale Recreation Centre. This facility is fully accessible and provides a two-level weight room, fitness classes, and a gymnasium. Child-minding services, a dedicated preschool room, a youth lounge and another for seniors lounge are available too in this centre.
Other fun activities are available at the Cloverdale Arena on the block next to the amphitheater. This facility provides skating facilities including skate and helmet rentals for a small fee.
