Mundy Park spreads over 435 acres off Hillcrest Street about 7 kilometres or 13 minutes’ drive to the southwest from downtown Coquitlam. With its vast acreage, which is home to two lakes—Mundy Lake and Lost Lake—the park is the city’s largest and provides a wide selection of recreational facilities.
The park‘s site was a former homestead originally owned by English immigrant George Munday. The city eventually acquired the acreage and developed it as a park during the 1970s, naming it after the site’s original owner.
Visitors can explore the park via a 5.5-kilometre multi-use community pathway looping around it. The trail network, which passes through the two lakes, can be negotiated on foot within one hour. The interior trails looping around the lakes are shorter but scenic and have viewing benches on the Lost Lake stretch.
In addition, mountain bikers can enjoy the park’s beginner and intermediate-level trail circuits. These are located at the junction of Mariner Way and Chilko Drive, featuring obstacles like log stacks, bridges, and a timber teeter-totter.
Ball fields, which are located on the park’s western periphery, are popular among sports lovers. Here, the Coquitlam Reds of the BC Premier Baseball League play their home games. Other sports facilities in the park include a lacrosse box and a nine-hole disc golf course.
Families with kids enjoy visits to the park, as its amenities also include a playground, an outdoor swimming pool, and a sheltered picnic area.
The park attracts visitors too with its pristine ecosystem, which the city has placed under a Forest Management Plan in June 2015. A temperate rainforest, the park’s environs consist of a mix of coniferous forest and deciduous woodland. This natural setting supports a wide variety of birds, insects, and mammals. The park’s forest denizens include butterflies, owls, bats and larger animals like deer and black bears.
