Minnekhada Regional Park sprawls at more than 100 hectares of natural beauty to rank as one of the major points of interest in the city of Coquitlam at the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. The park is less than 9 kilometres or 15 minutes’ drive to the northeast from Coquitlam’s downtown via Victoria Drive.The park occupies an enchanting location adjacent to the Pitt-Addington Marsh and the Pitt River.
Minnekhada Regional Park’s winsome features include lush trees and rock knolls, which serve as a thriving habitat for birds and other charming wildlife.
One of the best ways to enjoy the park is exploring it on foot, with its various nature trails accessible from several points. Hikers and birdwatchers primarily access Minnekhada through the park’s Quarry Road entrance, with another option on Oliver Road, which leads to the Minnekhada Lodge, another enchanting point of interest in Coquitlam.
Hikers have three primary trails to choose from in the park, all of which trace an eastern course onwards the Pitt-Addington Marsh boundary. These hiking routes include the Quarry Trail, Mid-Marsh Trail, Lodge/Fern Trails. An out-and-back walk through Quarry Trail, Fern Trail, and Lodge Trail stretches at about 3 miles.
Exploring these trails offers the opportunity to visit the centre of the park, which is the main marsh section bisected into the upper and lower areas by a dike with a small footbridge as the link.
The park offers five lookout points, with the Low Knoll quite inviting as it provides the full panorama of the lower marsh. The High Knoll, which is at a 600-foot elevation, is another popular choice, offering a grand view of the Pitt River and the Pitt Meadows.
Besides its natural attractions, the park is also home to some historic structures as its area was once a private enclave with farmhouses and a hunting lodge that remain amongst Minnekhada’s curiosities.
