Bear Creek Park on 88 Avenue in the neighbourhood of Newton is one of the most popular parks in the city of Surrey for good reasons. For one thing, this park next to the Surrey Arts Centre is huge and features plenty of facilities for every member of the family.

The park occupies the block bordered by 88 Avenue in the north, 84 Avenue in the south, King George Boulevard in the west, and 140 Street in the east.

The park’s facilities include soccer and football fields, a waterpark and outdoor pool, and a large playground. It also provides a skatepark, a fenced-in dog off-leash area, flower gardens, and a running track. The track oval runs over 400 metres of a rubber surface and has a grass infield, making it ideal not only for running but also other field activities like jumping and throwing events.

Another attraction comes in a mini-golf course and the Bear Creek Miniature Train popular among kids.

The park provides visitors seven picnic shelters on a first-come, first-serve basis. These facilities are spread in several park areas for convenience, with a pair each located near the playground, the running track, and the 140 Street parking lot. A solitary picnic shelter is near the park’s pavilion.

The park’s gardens display several public artworks including an immersive rendition by Philippe Pasquier entitled Lingua Aqua, which combines sculptural, graphic, architectural, audio, and water elements to dish out an immersive sonic experience.

Another display standout comes in the Poetry Rock by Rev. Dr. Byung Sub Van who engraved on a stone a poem in English and Korean reflecting on the theme of water.

Also a consistent head-turner is the park’s large granite sculpture by Joan Miriam Adams titled Winged Lion Woman depicting archeological and mythological figures.

Events and celebrations hosted by the city and open free to the public draw crowds at Beer Creek Park, with the festive November light displays among them.

The Surrey Arts Centre just across the park offers more events during its season that traditionally starts in September. Its stage presents concerts, plays, and comedy among other shows.
